Ring Buffer Concept
Unlike traditional video recording, RingShot uses a ring buffer, a circular memory buffer that continuously overwrites itself. The camera always records, but only the most recent footage is kept in memory.
When a trigger event occurs (e.g. an arrow impact detected by the TriggerPod), the ring buffer is frozen. Recording stops and the buffered footage becomes available for instant playback. You never need to start or stop recording manually because the system always has the last few seconds of footage ready.
In archery analysis, the moment of interest (arrow release) happens unpredictably. With a ring buffer, the system always captures it. You can review what happened before the trigger, which is exactly when the release occurs.
Resolution & FPS Modes
The available recording modes depend on your camera model. RingShot supports multiple camera types, from high-end industrial cameras to budget USB cameras.
The default high-speed camera included with RingShot systems.
Standard Modes
| Resolution | Frame Rate | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 1440 × 1080 | 227 FPS | Detailed form analysis, best image clarity |
| 1440 × 1080 | 100 FPS | Best image quality, slower speed, needs good lighting |
| 720 × 540 | 504 FPS | Good balance between speed and resolution, great for release analysis |
Dark Modes use longer exposure times for brighter images in low-light conditions.
| Resolution | Frame Rate | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 720 × 540 Dark | 227 FPS | Low-light indoor shooting with moderate speed |
| 720 × 540 Dark | 100 FPS | Maximum brightness for very dark environments |
Stripe Modes (Ultra High Speed) reduce the vertical resolution to achieve the highest frame rates. Use a 1×4 horizontal viewport layout for best display.
| Resolution | Frame Rate | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 1440 × 360 | 660 FPS | Arrow flight and paradox observation |
| 1080 × 240 | 904 FPS | Highest frame rate, best for arrow tuning |
| Resolution | Frame Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 640 × 360 | 330 FPS | Highest speed, lower resolution |
| 1280 × 720 | 100 FPS | HD resolution at moderate speed |
| 1920 × 1080 | 50 FPS | Full HD, good for general form review but too slow for release detail |
| Resolution | Frame Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1920 × 1080 | 100 FPS | Full HD at moderate speed |
| 1280 × 720 | 150 FPS | HD at higher frame rate, best option for this camera |
Recording Settings Panel
The Recording Settings panel in the sidebar provides all controls for managing recording and saving footage.
Recording Controls
| Control | Description |
|---|---|
| Stop Recording / Start Recording | Toggle between recording and playback mode. Keyboard shortcut: Space. When recording is stopped, the current ring buffer content is frozen and available for playback and saving. |
| Quick Save | Save the recorded footage to the configured save directory using an automatic filename. Only available in playback mode (after recording is stopped). |
| Save As… | Choose a custom filename and location to save the recorded footage. Opens a file dialog. Only available in playback mode. |
Resolution & Duration
| Control | Description |
|---|---|
| Resolution | Dropdown to select the recording resolution and frame rate. The available modes depend on your camera model (see tables above). Can only be changed while recording. |
| Recording Duration | Slider to set the ring buffer length from 1 to 30 seconds. This determines how many seconds of footage are kept before the trigger event. Longer durations require more memory. Can only be changed while recording. |
Save Options
| Control | Description |
|---|---|
| Save Directory | Shows the current save directory for Quick Save. Click Select… to change the folder. |
| Auto Save | When enabled, automatically saves the recorded footage when recording is stopped (manually or via trigger). Useful for autonomous hands-free operation. |
| Enable H.264 | Use H.264 encoding instead of the default codec. Produces significantly smaller files but requires longer encoding times. Recommended if you plan to archive or share recordings. |
| Split Videos | When enabled, saves each camera's footage as a separate video file instead of a single combined file. Useful when you need to import individual angles into external analysis tools. |
Combine Auto Save with the trigger system for a fully automated workflow. The TriggerPod stops recording, the system saves the footage, plays it back, then returns to recording. No user interaction needed.
Multi-Camera Synchronization
When multiple cameras are connected, RingShot synchronizes all ring buffers via software. This ensures that all cameras capture the same time window and freeze simultaneously when triggered.
- All cameras must use the same resolution and FPS mode
- Synchronization is handled automatically, no manual alignment needed
- Buffer depth (recording duration) is identical across all cameras
- Playback shows all camera angles in sync, frame-for-frame
